Aug 10, 2012Re: mercury 135 blackmax tach sig Your best bet is to get the service manual with diagrams in it. It will have the control diagrams in it also. Put the whole shebang back to original and fun out without worries. It sounds like the wiring is a little flaky anyway. Maybe the connector itself is dirty or worn and needs the pins spread a bit.

I should have included - 1994 Mercury 200 carbed offshore model. PW, I haven't been able to check motor since I came up w/ this question. Do both rectifiers have the gray wire going to the solenoid or is one unused? Can I run the motor w/ just one in service? You also gave me another thought - the starter is sometimes very weak, barely turns over.

Jul 03, 2008Re: Mercury Tach Problems - is rectifier bad, or stator?? I just went back and re-read the posts. If the stator is arcing over to ground, it could make your tachometer go crazy. That arc would be the source of the electrical noise of item 1. If the switch sweep doesn't help, you're back to a bad stator. hope it helps John[PDF]
