I have 2003 mitsubishi lancer es and i have transmission
Hi I have 2003 mitsubishi lancer es and i have transmission problem. Sometimes when I'm driving around 30mph the transmission kicks out of gear RPM goes up for 2 seconds and then it kicks back in gear hard if i don't let the gas pedal off or if i let the gas pedal off it goes back in gear.Thanks. At this point it sounds like you are losing your OD clutch friction discs at this point unfortunately. I was hoping this was occurring on shift, as there is a common issue going into 3rd that we see that matches this and is an easy fix.. mid gear however not so much. In order to manipulate gears the transmission has a series of different clutch and brake frictions that are used to engage the appropriate drive ratio gears. If a clutch or a brake fails to engage or slips, the engine will rev until it catches again. In third and fourth gear the only shared resource is the OD clutch friction discs and hydraulics. Considering you are getting a flare up in both 3rd and 4th, and it is occurring when you are locked in 3, there is really very little else to suspect here. While theoretically you could have a speed sensor cause a flare, there are a few problems with this in regard to your situation. First, it is rare to have this problem and not a Service Engine light. Second, the speed sensors just read a piece of metal zipping past them.. they have no idea what gear they are in and nothing changes with the operation of the speed sensors from gear to gear.. meaning if there were an issue here it would not be isolated to any gear(s), it would be all over the map. At this point your best bet is going to be to get it to a dealer or shop with a full scan tool (not an OBD reader) so that the transmission module can be scanned for any faults. The hope here is that we find the OD solenoid malfunctioning (creating insufficient hydraulic pressure on OD clutch, allowing it to slip) or even the off chance of the unlikely speed sensor fault. With nothing noteworthy occurring there, we will be looking at early signs of friction failure. This will not improve with time. While it is possible if this is still rather inconsistent that it will go a long time without further failure, however if it is a friction failure and it is worsening, it will worsen quickly. When it lets go entirely, you will lose 3rd and 4th gear. I'm sorry I do not have better news.. hopefully a transmission scan will show an electrical malfunction in the history that could influence the flare, but if not it will be time to make a decision with regard to over hauling the transmission when it worsens or getting a used transmission, etc.Hi, Are you in top gear when this normally occurs or does it vary? Is this happening primarily when coasting or maintaining speed, or does it seem to occur in relation to shifting? Thanks. You said it happens primarily when maintaining speed, and usually between 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th.. but then you also said not when shifting. Is it possible that this is occurring right during/after the shift when it happens , but the shifting is more often normal? No problem at all, thanks for the clarification. Can you identify anything other than downhill that seems to be consistent with the problem occurring? For instance it only occurs cold/hot/after 10 miles of driving.. or weather related like only when weather is hot/cold/damp etc. What is the current mileage (I'm unclear if your reference to the flush was at 25000 or 25000 ago etc)? Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX the current mileage? When the problem occurs, do you see either the Service Engine Soon light come on or the "N" light flash? Thanks for being patient with all the questions; there is very little that is self-serviceable with regard to the transmission so it is important we get as much information as possible. So no "N" light flashing either? You mentioned that the problem occurs when maintaining speed and it definitely does not occur during shifts. You think it may be in third or fourth gear when it happens. Is it possible that it happens in both 3rd and 4th, or do you think it is certain it only occurs in one of them? Thanks. You would know if you have the N light. Upper models have a PRNDL indication on the meter, and the N is used to indicate malfunctions (like the Service Engine light). If you do not have one that is OK. On your shifter, do you have the PRND2L or PRND32L?Thanks. Have you ever tried driving in 3 to see if the problem occurs in that shift position?

Mitsubishi Eclipse Shifting Problems with Manual Transmission
The manual transmission may become difficult to shift, this is commonly caused by binding between the synchronizer and the gear surface. Adding a special friction modifier to the manual transmission fluid will often correct this condition. If the problem persists revised synchronizer kits may be available.
