But replacing it with a breaker box would not be a good first time DIY project. Best get an electrician. The fact you are asking this question make this probably beyond your personal abilities right now. Not safe .
Things that have to happen. First you have to remove all the fuses then to remove power from the main input to the old fuse box if you don't have a master cutoff you would have to remove the Meter from the meter box. Thus upsetting the power company. Has to be inspected by the power company or an electrician when you put it back as there is a tamper seal on the two.
That cuts power into the home. Then you are still working with a hot meter box. You would remove the old fuse box possibly having to replace wires and hook in the new breaker box which will not fit in the old hole.
I'm telling you this not to tell you how but to tell you it's not an easy DIY thing. It can be hazardous if you don't follow the steps.
I'd get an electrician. I know how but it may not be legal for me to do it in many places.3Add A Circuit Fuse0Add A Circuit0This is really a job for an electrician. Circuit Breaker AMPS = cord length, length, and temperature AMPS = receptacle AMPS. carry on with the circuit. i might improve each and every thing and make confident no one cheated on the grounds everywhere.0hello, if you don't want to expend much money on it, you can take the old box, the 1 is just under the meter, and up grade it with a panel with 24 circuits, that's a dangerous if you don't know how to work with high voltage, but also you can make some kind a sub panel next to the old box, and buy it as a sub panel, then you have new box, this kind of work is if you don't want to mess with the city and electrical company inspectors, IN YOUR OWN RISK, BE CARE FULL1if there is a spare fuseway and you can get a fuse that will fit at the correct rating for the circuit you want to add then yes0I can if you fly me there !! P.S. Is the cottage near a lake ? Thanks0replace the panel2
