Nov 19, 2012-Once the fuse blows, the alternator is NOT charging.-When this first happened I could just replace the fuse and go on, but within a few days it would start to blow the fuse instantly.-It seems like the lower the battery gets, the quicker the fuse blows. ie: after charging the battery the fuse will not blow right away.

Jul 27, 2010Perkins gas- Alternator blows 30 amp fuse on start upuit. The alternator has to have battery voltage applied to the field terminal for it to start the charging cycle. Check battery voltage with unit dead and again with engine at half throttle. If voltage increases by at least 1 volt, the alternator is charging. Diesel engine will run fine without any voltage, just needs battery for starting.
