The old Ames Lathe Compound Cross Slide I want to adapt to this Elgin Lathe arrived today. The qualiity is excellent; but lots of surface rust to be removed. The problem is the height. If you examine the image below, you will see that the cutter height is higher than the lathe center.

The height of the centerline is the same in all vintages of Elgin and Hardinge lathes--4.5" above the bed in the case of 9" swing lathes. Elgin lathes made before Hardinge bought out Elgin were, however, slightly different (offset slightly to one side) so that Hardinge/Elgin headstocks and tailstocks did not line up with one another.
