SOLVED: Manual Transmission fluid for Ford Escort ZX2 - Fixya
wwwa››Ford›Escort›2001 Ford Escort ZX2Mar 28, 2009This is my first Ford ever with a manual transmission. Every manual transmission I have had before used 90 weigh gear oil. This 2002 Escort ZX2 calls for automatic transmission fluid??? Seems really crazy. Is this right and is there anything that I should get or add to the trans fluid I know this sounds crazy according to Ford: You can use-
Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission
Alternative Transaxle Fluid - SAE 75W90 Gear Oil
API GL-4 You are seeing that right, one instance they call for 75W90 and the other it is ATF. It is ok to run either, 75W90 will give you smoother shifts and less noise. This transmission is filled through the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) hole.Best answer · 5Hi there,

Fluid level and fill plug (small)
Fluid level tube Check Place a drain pan under the transmission. NOTE: It will be necessary to hold the drain plug (larger plug) with a wrench when removing the fluid level indicator plug. With the transmission in the PARK position and the engine running, use a 3/16 inch Allen key to remove the fluid level indicator plug. Allow the fluid to drain. Wait approximately one minute. When the fluid comes out as a thin stream or a drip, it is at the correct level. If no fluid comes out of the hole, fluid will need to be added. Continue with this procedure. Install the special tool into the pan. Using the special tool, extract approximately one pint of clean automatic transmission fluid from a suitable container. Using the special tools, fill the transmission with clean automatic transmission fluid. Remove the special tool. Allow fluid to drain. Wait approximately one minute. when fluid comes out as a thin stream or drip, the fluid is at correct level. If no fluid drains from the plug, continue adding clean automatic transmission fluid in 1/2-pint increments until fluid starts to drain from the plug. Remove the special tool from the pan. Reinstall the fluid level indicator plug.3dextron mercron 3, automatic transmission fluid. Mostly standard on fords and others for both auto and manual trans. Underneath the air intake pipe, at the rear right hand side there is a 4 prong plug for the speed sensor. Its electronic so there wont be any cable, its a round sensor with a horizontal plug on the end of it. Take a flat head screwdriver and pry the 2 holding prongs off the wiring harnes. then get a #10 socket 1/4in drive with exstinsions works best take out the bolt going right with the rachet. once you get it out just pull and twist the sensor out. It seems to be easier with a hose at the end of the funnel to pour the fluid in. stick the hose where the speed sensor was. once its full just assemble it back the way it was.2Checking the transmission fluid in your Volkswagen isn't as simple as it used to be. To check the transmission fluid level requires your vehicle to be on a lift that it can be set level on. With the engine running and transmission warm, a plug has to be removed from the bottom of the transmission pan. This plug is at the base of a short stand-pipe (tube) inside the transmission oil pan. With the plug removed a small amount of oil should spill out (what is trapped in the stand-pipe) and if the fluid is at the correct it will continue to drip. If that is the case the transmission fluid is at the correct level. If all that comes out is what is trapped in the stand-pipe then the fluid level could be low. To add fluid to the transmission requires removal of the fill plug that is located on the front left upper corner by the oil pan. Oil is added at that point until oil starts running out or dripping from the stand-pipe. When replacing the fill plug you also need a replacement lock for the plug from Volkswagen. Many of today's vehicles are equipped with sealed transmissions that require specialized procedures, equipment and parts to check the transmission fluid level. Sorry for the bad or good news. This way just make sure that the person services the transmission to keep the warranty valid.0With so little info, you can only guess. Most computer controled transmission default to either second or third gear if there is an electrical problem.
The mitubishi trans has sensors on the trans that if they are hooked up wrong, it wont shift. If the fluid is full and clean, odds are you have an electrical problem. Could even be a fuse or the computer.
Hope this helps.0Mine is an 88 cant imagine its different, thereis a plastic tank on the rhs of the trans that has a screw off lid, you will need the car on stands or a hoist level and with the oil at opperating temp you will also need a bottle pump or some type of plunger to fill it the engine must be running and add the fluid slowly allow time for it to be taken into the trans repeat until at the mark and stays there0

wwwstheoilguy››ATF, Differential, Trans, Brakes, P/SIf it's anything like my 1995LX with the automatic transmission, it uses regular Dexron III, but perhaps you need to reread the Owner's Manual, since a car with an automatic or manual transmission gets the same Owner's Manual. That car doesn't have a dipstick or a place to add fluid, so have fun with that!
