how to open the outdoor metal grey box mounted on the wall
Mar 18, 2011My AC condenser fan keeps running in this cold temperature so I think it has some problems and I want to turn off the power to AC. But I cannot open the metal grey box mounted on the wall next to the AC where I expect that breaker switches or fuses are inside. The box is sealed by hooking its upper side downward and so I cannot open the front side.Status: OpenThere's a tab on the bottom. Push it.
The door will drop 1/4 inch.
Open the door.Best answer · 3Whoa, Dude. You are trying to get crisped. That 277 Volts will bite you, I swear! There should be a breaker in your main circuit breaker panel, that is for the A/C. There is a pull fuse or service disconnect switch in a box near your compressor that is in series with the power coming to the unit. The door on that box should open easily. Try some WD40 before you go at it with a wrench or channellocks. It kind of sounds like a problem with your thermostatic switch in the control panel. If you have an electronic control panel, usually, just unplugging it from the wall face is enough to make the condenser shut off. If you have a little clear tube behind the cover to the controls, with a silvery substance inside, it is a mercury switch. There is an adjustment screw that you can turn to calibrate your thermostat. You could also purchase a digital thermostate to replace your older, mercury switch thermostat. I wish you the best.0Hi there,
Opening the grey metal box at the AC unit outside would be dangerous. There should be a circuit breaker at the main load center to turn off the power to the condensing unit.
There is definitely a problem with the controls because the condensing unit should not be running during the cold weather.
The best thing to do will be to call an AC service technician to find the problem with the control circuit that is keeping the condenser running.
Hope this helps,
Al2The main contactor could be stuck in the closed position. If it is, then not just the fan is running, but also the compressor, costing you big bucks in electricity. . In Fact, the compressor and fan are wired together, so I can virtually guarantee that this is the case.
The breaker box on the wall should have a tab sticking out at the bottom with a hole in it where one could place a padlock. If it does, push down on that tab while pulling the lid out at the bottom. That will expose either a breaker or a fuse you can pull out, turn upside down and re-insert which is the OFF position.
Once you get is shut down, the contactor is about 25 bucks at a local electric supply store, and takes about a half hour to replace for a first timer. (ten minutes for a pro) Take the old one out and bring it with you to the store. There is only two or three different kinds, but you need the right one if you do not want to do any modifying upon installation.
Good luck, and remember to not turn it back on until everything is hooked up just like it was originally.
If you do not see a tab like that, then look for screws that hold it closed.2Check the fuse or breaker panel in the house. There should be a fuse OR breaker for the ac unit do NOT have to remove cover on box. You can get an elec tical shock too..2
