Aug 05, 2010Manual Cam chain tensioner vs Automatic? My '03 R6 has developed a very slight rattle that can be felt through the bars. It has 23k miles and I believe it might be the CCT. OEM is automatic, many people swap them out to an APE Manual CCT. Does anyone have any experience with this? An oem CCT is $120 vs $60 for manual.

May 19, 2014Manual v automatic Cam chain tensioner. Now that I have the bike running, I have noticed the engine is a little rattly. I am hoping that this is down to a worn cam chain tensioner. My Question is: am I better off just replacing with a stock auto tensioner or go for an aftermarket manual tensioner? I am a relative noob to this sort of thing

Sep 07, 2009The cam chain tensioner on the F3 is shot again. I just replaced it about 6000 miles ago with an OEM part. Apparently Honda's automatic tensioners are notoriously flaky. Searching some of the CBR boards, a lot of folks switch to a manual tensioner such as the APE.

The key point is that the automatic tensioner clicks in incremental amounts. Cam chains wear/seat dynamically (no increments). When the wear, which by my manual tensioner adjustments has proven to be minimal, isn't enough to move the rack forward forward enough to seat in, but just barely over the tip of the tooth there will be problems.

A fellow at the shop said not to use them but the guy who told me doesn't remember why he said that. so I'm wondering, is there a downside to using one?
