ELI5: Why do Ford trucks have manual hubs, but nobody else's do?
Simple enough question: why do Ford F250s and up have manual hubs that require you to get out and flip them after shifting to 4x4, while to the best of my knowledge Dodges, Chevys, etc. don't? So if you bought a base model. that explains 3 votesI believe that Dodge's, Chevy's, and F150's come with fixed hubs, so the axles are engaged to the hubs 100% of the time. Dec 15, 2017SuperDuty trucks are 'work trucks' so they are often off road, plowing snow etc. you were in 2WD and got stuck in a vacuum actuated system it would be near impossible to have those hubs lock in if they truck cant move. Ford recognized this and put the manual locking hubs on all trucks (except the F150).

If you have manual locking hubs they lock when you turn clockwise. This engages the wheels to the front axles and the front differential. You can then engage the 4wd from the cab lever.
